Generosity of spirit

Recently a couple of things have prompted me to consider the notion of ‘generosity of spirit’. The first was my experience of the real concern and genuine distress caused to people across the globe when one company chose to ground all its aircraft  as part of an ongoing industrial relations process. The second was an [...]

Understanding Emotional Health

My last two blog posts (part 1 and part 2) have introduced the concept of taking personal responsibility for the way we respond to challenging situations, of operating ‘above and below the line’. In those posts I made passing reference to ‘emotional health’, so I thought it would be a good time to explain that concept too. The idea of emotional health takes the notions of personal responsibility and ‘above and below the line’ a few steps further. As we discuss emotional health we are getting to the real core of the work of Global Leadership Foundation, that is to support leaders in increasing their emotional health levels and understanding the positive impact this has on themselves, those around them, their organisations and the broader community (local and global).

The secret to better working relationships (part two)

In my last post I introduced the concept of the ‘line of choice’ which exists between a ‘default’, automatic response to a challenging situation – a ‘below the line’ response – and the more emotionally healthy option of a thoughtful, constructive response – an ‘above the line’ response – to the same situation. In this [...]

The secret to better working relationships (part one)

Imagine you are in the car, driving along happily, when from out of nowhere someone cuts dangerously in front of you. You are forced to brake quickly to avoid an accident. How would you react? Like most people you would probably react in one of the traditional ways: a heavy hand on the horn, a [...]

Doing it with intent (part two)

In my last post I introduced the concept of working with ‘intent’. I made the distinction between your ‘intentions’ (what you intend to do) and your ‘intent’ (how you wish to be or be seen). Acting with intent is a powerful way of achieving goals whilst staying true to yourself. Introducing the notion of intent [...]

Doing it with intent (part one)

Every day, politicians, business people and others make statements that speak about good intentions. They mark out these intentions with statements which usually include the phrase “we are committed to”. What they mean is that they will try their best to do whatever it is that they are committed to. Most of the time, this [...]

Why we choose our remote locations

With our next Tetepare Leadership Experience now only a couple of months away, I thought it might be a good time to address one of the most common questions we get about all our leadership experiences. That question is: “Why are these programs so remote?” A frequent related question is “Hasn’t the whole outdoor leadership [...]

Is your business living on fad diets?

Several years ago I knew a CEO who was fond of networking with others in similar positions. Initially this seemed to be a good thing, as it meant that he was exposed to a lot of new ideas. But over time things changed. His team began to dread his return from one of his network [...]

What are you thinking with? (part two)

In my last post, I talked about the three ‘centres’ – the head, the heart and the gut – and the tendency each of us has to prefer “thinking” from one of these centres over the others. I also touched on the idea that achieving real clarity in our thinking only occurs when we achieve [...]

What are you thinking with? (part one)

If I were to ask you what you think with, you’d probably look at me strangely. “My brain, of course”, I hear you respond. But it’s not as simple as that. In fact, when we are effectively thinking, we are doing so with our whole body. Over the next two blog posts, I’ll explain what [...]
